FFJ Portfolio - January 2022 Report

This is my FFJ Portfolio - January 2022 Report; previous monthly reports are accessible in the Archives. The actual monthly reports are accessible here.

Purchases

During January, the decline in the share price of many high-quality companies resulted in somewhat more attractive valuations than in recent months. I, therefore, took the opportunity to initiate positions in Copart and Danaher; I review these companies here and here.

These are the purchases I made in January.

  • Automatic Data Processing (ADP) - 100 shares plus shares in accounts for which I do not disclose details;
  • Blackstone (BX) - 100 shares. I now hold 900 shares in a 'Core' account in the FFJ Portfolio;
  • Copart (CPRT) - 200 shares plus shares in accounts for which I do not disclose details;
  • Danaher (DHR) - 160 shares. I now hold 160 shares in a 'Core' account in the FFJ Portfolio;
  • Intact Financial (IFC.to) - purchases in accounts for which I do not disclose details;
  • Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) - 140 shares plus shares in accounts for which I do not disclose details; and
  • Stryker (SYK) - purchases in accounts for which I do not disclose details;

Holdings

On January 7, 2022, I published my Investment Holdings Review in which I rank my top 30 holdings. This ranking compares my holdings relative to similar reviews conducted in mid-April 2021 and mid-August 2020.

The total value of the holdings in the FFJ Portfolio as at the end of December 2018 (my earliest) and January 2022 (most recent) is:

December 2018

Core Accounts: ~$351,000 CDN and ~$715,000 USD

Side Accounts: ~$419,000 CDN and ~$497,000 USD

Total: ~$770,000 CDN and ~$1,212,000 USD

January 2022

Core Accounts: ~$773,000 CDN and ~$1,858,000 USD

Side Accounts: ~$666,000 CDN and ~$1,475,000 USD

Total: ~$1,439,000 CDN and ~$3,333,000 USD

NOTE: The values reflected above exclude investments in several tax-efficient accounts for which I do not disclose details.

The increase in the value of the portfolio is attributed to a broad increase in the value of the underlying investments and additional investments made over 3 years.

Income

I focus on total potential investment return as opposed to dividend income and dividend yield. This is evident from the number of holdings with sub 1.5% dividend yield.

I do, however, track dividend income generated within the FFJ Portfolio purely out of habit.

The dividend income generated from the FFJ Portfolio holdings in January 2022 amounts to:

  • Core Accounts – CDN ~$2,478 and USD ~$1,802
  • Side Accounts – CDN ~$2,421 and USD ~$1,611

In comparison, the January 2021 dividend income amounts to:

  • Core Accounts – CDN ~$2,300 and USD ~$1,404
  • Side Accounts – CDN ~$1,498 and USD ~$1,349
